Kyrgyzstan Signs UN Convention on Marine Biodiversity Conservation

At the United Nations Headquarters in New York on July 17, Minister of Economy and Commerce Bakyt Sydykov signed the Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ).

The agreement aims to protect and sustainably use marine biological resources, regulate access to marine genetic resources, promote international scientific cooperation, and strengthen mechanisms for managing marine ecosystems.

Kyrgyzstan's accession to the international agreement confirms the country's commitment to global efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainable development. Despite its lack of access to the sea, the republic recognizes the interconnectedness of global ecosystems and the need for collective action to preserve them.

The BBNJ Agreement was developed within the UN as a multilateral international treaty and is part of the implementation of Goal 14 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for the benefit of all”. The document aims to enhance the effectiveness of the international regime for the protection of the high seas.
