The ADB has approved the allocation of $400 million for the borders of 11 countries, including those in Central Asia

The Asian Development Bank has approved a $400 million BUILD financing facility to modernise border crossing points in the Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) region. Kyrgyzstan is one of the 11 CAREC member countries.

The funds are to be used to upgrade road and rail border crossings and to introduce digital systems and modern screening equipment. The bank announced the decision on 27 August.

The aim of BUILD is to reduce border crossing times and transport and logistics costs. In addition to infrastructure, the initiative provides for the improvement and harmonisation of border procedures, capacity building for relevant agencies, and greater involvement of the private sector.

The ADB notes that growth in trade is placing increased pressure on border crossings.

CAREC brings together Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and China. The initiative’s geographical scope thus extends beyond Central Asia.
