Almaty proposes that SCO member states establish a platform for cooperation between technology parks

Olzhas Smagulov, Deputy Mayor of Almaty, proposed at the 5th Forum of Heads of Regions of SCO Member States the creation of a permanent platform for cooperation between technology parks, innovation centres and start-up ecosystems in the organisation’s member states.

According to him, such a platform could bring together young entrepreneurs, investors, universities and technology companies to implement joint projects in the fields of artificial intelligence, digital services and other areas.

“We propose creating a permanent platform for cooperation between technology parks, innovation centres and start-up ecosystems in SCO cities,” Smagulov stated.

He noted that Almaty is currently Kazakhstan’s largest metropolis, as well as the country’s financial and innovation hub. According to him, the city attracts around 40% of all foreign investment in Kazakhstan and generates more than half of all transactions in the country’s economy.

Smagulov cited Almaty’s openness to international cooperation, new technologies and innovation as a key advantage.

“We advocate partnership, progress and joint development,” he emphasised.

In addition to technological cooperation, Almaty proposed developing joint tourist routes between SCO member states, expanding business ties between entrepreneurs in the regions, and strengthening humanitarian and academic cooperation.

According to Smagulov, cities in SCO member states could become not only centres of economic growth, but also a space for trust, innovation and sustainable development for the entire region.

The 5th Forum of Heads of Regions of SCO Member States is taking place on 28 May in Cholpon-Ata. Representatives of regions, cities and business communities from the organisation’s member states are participating in the event.
