The antitrust service should either be disbanded or given more powers

The authorities plan to grant the antimonopoly service additional regulatory mechanisms. This was announced by the deputy head of the presidential administration, Azamat Kadyraliyev.

According to him, the idea is to give the service the right to officially request businesses to justify price increases for goods, especially during periods of high demand, such as before holidays or in the event of sharp price hikes.

“We see how, on the eve of holidays, such as New Year's Eve, the price of eggs can rise from 8 to 15 KGS. The antimonopoly authority should be able to officially ask the question: why?” said Minister of Justice and Deputy Prime Minister Ayaz Baitov.

He stressed that today the antimonopoly service is effectively limited in its tools — it only monitors, but does not regulate. At the same time, Baetov added that this is a typical situation where a government agency has tasks but no authority.

“This raises the question: either give them real tools or eliminate them and merge them with other agencies, such as the Ministry of Economic Development,” he added.

According to him, there are many such “powerless” government agencies in the system. In this regard, there are plans to review functions and redistribute powers in order to strengthen control where it is really needed.
