Kyrgyz banks hold assets worth 160 billion KGS abroad

At the end of 2024, the volume of assets of the Kyrgyz banking sector located outside the country amounted to 162.5 billion KGS. This is equivalent to 19.2% of all assets in the sector. These data are contained in the report of the National Bank.

Most of the external assets are located in countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (including the US, EU, Japan, South Korea, 38 countries in total), accounting for 8.9% of the banking sector's total assets, or 75.4 billion KGS. Kazakhstan and Russia stand out separately in the structure, also accounting for a significant share.

As noted by the regulator, the main investments are in correspondent and deposit accounts with foreign financial institutions — 149.6 billion KGS or 92.1% of all placements abroad.

According to data provided by the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic, it can be concluded that the geographical structure of the banking sector's assets is changing. Thus, the share of assets in OECD countries is gradually declining, giving way to other jurisdictions. Investments in Russia are also declining. It can be seen that between 2019 and 2024, banks held the largest volume of assets in the Russian Federation in 2020. Kazakhstan, on the other hand, has seen relative stability.
