More than 300 schools in the Osh region will receive food supplies

A ceremony to hand over food supplies from the UN World Food Programme and the Chinese government took place at School No. 86 named after Kurmanzhan Datka in Osh.

The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the Kyrgyz Republic, Liu Jianping, the Deputy Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Osh region, Ilyaz Tashbaev, and the Representative and Country Director of the UN WFP in the Kyrgyz Republic, Kojiro Nakai.

The UN WFP and the Chinese government, through the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), will provide full school meals to more than 100,000 children in Kyrgyzstan. This is the first multilateral initiative of the CIDCA in the country and in Central Asia, implemented by the China Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund.

In total, more than 1,700 tonnes of enriched wheat flour, vegetable oil, rice and lentils will be delivered to more than 300 schools in the Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken regions in 2025. These schools were identified by the WFP and the Ministry of Education and Science based on poverty levels and nutritional needs.

As part of the National School Feeding Programme, implemented under the leadership of the Ministry of Education and Science and with the support of the WFP, more than 920 schools have already introduced full hot meals with the support of various donors.

Every year, the WFP not only supplies food, but also modernises school canteen infrastructure, provides canteen equipment and trains cooks in the preparation of safe and nutritious meals.
