EDB receives its first rating in Asia: what this means for Kyrgyzstan

The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) has, for the first time, been awarded a long-term credit rating of ‘Ag’ by the Hong Kong-based agency CCXAP, with a stable outlook. This gives the bank greater opportunities to raise funds on Asian markets and expand its investor base.

For Kyrgyzstan, which is one of the EDB’s shareholders, this opens up further prospects. Firstly, the bank will be able to attract more and cheaper funding, which will potentially increase the volume of investment in the country – in infrastructure, energy, water supply and logistics. Secondly, Kyrgyzstan’s overall image as a shareholder in an international financial institution with a high credit rating is also changing.

Previously, a significant proportion of lending took place within the framework of intergovernmental agreements. Now, however, with the EDB’s entry into new capital markets, the image of the Kyrgyz Republic is also improving, meaning that financing can become more market-oriented, large-scale and flexible. This also increases the likelihood of new joint projects, which will be launched more quickly and on more favourable terms.

The CCXAP agency noted that the EDB has a sound financial position, a high level of capital and an effective risk management system. As at the end of 2025, the bank’s financial resilience is assessed as high. Additional stability is provided by $6.3 billion in callable capital provided by member countries, including those in Central Asia.

Overall, the award of this rating in Asia strengthens the EDB’s position in international markets and may have a direct impact on Kyrgyzstan — both through increased investment and by enhancing its financial standing in the region.
