EFSD and ADB donated a digitised copy of a film about the Toktogul HPP to Kyrgyz power engineers

The Eurasian Fund for Stabilisation and Development (EFSD) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have donated a digitised copy of the film ‘In the Year of the Restless Sun’, dedicated to the construction of the Toktogul HPP, to the Kyrgyz Republic's energy sector. This event is timed to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the Kyrgyz power industry, which will be celebrated on 22 December 2024, and the 50th anniversary of the Toktogul HPP, scheduled for 5 January 2025.

The documentary film, shot in 1976 by the People's Artist of the Kyrgyz SSR Algimantas Vidugiris, tells the story of the construction of the country's largest energy facility through the fates of its creators. The film was awarded at international festivals, including the Silver Dove prize in Leipzig in 1977. The UTRK TV channel will show the film on 22 December at 14:30 and repeat on 5 January at 17:30.

At Toktogul HPP continues modernisation. In November 2024 commissioned a new hydroelectric unit, which became the third modernised at the station. Rehabilitation of the last unit is still underway. The EFSR and ADB have allocated $270 million for the modernisation of the facility.

Kyrgyzstan is one of the founding countries of the EFSD, and the volume of projects implemented by the fund in the republic exceeds $700 million.
