EEC has discussed cooperation in migration with Amy Pope in Geneva

On 1 November in Geneva, Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Bakytzhan Sagintaev had a working meeting with Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

The main topic of the talks was the discussion of promising areas of cooperation in migration, focusing on the labour flows' regulation in Eurasia. During the meeting, Bakytzhan Sagintayev noted the importance of the Commission joining the IOM global network to develop ethical recruitment policies and strategies. He emphasised the migration attractiveness of the Eurasian region and expressed interest in cooperation in several topical areas with IOM. One of the key issues was international experience in recognising migrants' skills through comparability of qualifications. The EEC regularly updates the list of in-demand professions and positions in the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, for which qualification requirements are approved. Amy Pope, in turn, expressed her interest in studying this list and emphasised the importance of sharing opportunities for future employment interactions. She proposed to consider the creation of a special joint programme. An important direction was the cooperation within the framework of regional and global IOM projects implemented in the EAEU countries. Bakytzhan Sagintayev suggested developing and launching a pilot project to improve labour migrants' financial literacy in the Eurasian Economic Union.

Both sides reaffirmed the importance of deepening cooperation between the EEC and IOM and signing the updated Memorandum of Cooperation of 2013. The talks concluded with an agreement to continue the working relationship and develop practical interaction.
