Kyrgyzstan to prepare its position for international conferences on climate and biodiversity

Kyrgyzstan will prepare specific proposals for international conferences on climate change and biodiversity conservation. This was announced on 8 October by Erlist Akunbekov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture and the Processing Industry, at the National Dialogue on Climate and Environmental Protection.

According to him, climate resilience and nature conservation form part of the national development policy. The condition of glaciers is directly linked to the country’s water resources, whilst water availability affects the potential of agriculture and the energy sector. The condition of land and pastures, in turn, has an impact on food security and the incomes of rural households.

Akunbekov also noted that Kyrgyzstan, as a mountainous country, is promoting the international Mountain Agenda. In 2027, Bishkek will host the Second Global Mountain Summit, ‘Bishkek+25’.

“Kyrgyzstan can bring together issues relating to climate, glaciers, water, biodiversity, food and sustainable development within the framework of the Mountain Agenda,” he said.

In the near future, the international community will hold the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan, followed by the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Antalya.

According to Akunbekov, Kyrgyzstan must participate in these events with a clear understanding of its national interests and concrete proposals. The National Dialogue is dedicated precisely to preparing such a position.

The event is taking place as part of the conclusion of National Climate and Nature Week and the preparation of Kyrgyzstan’s position for the international conferences on climate and biodiversity.
