She made this statement at the National Climate Dialogue organised by the UN in conjunction with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision.
According to her, Kyrgyzstan is already feeling the effects of climate change: accelerated glacier melt, water shortages, and degradation of pastures and land, which requires immediate action on the ground.
As part of its adaptation measures, the government plans to: build reservoirs and dams, introduce water-saving technologies, and create artificial glaciers to ensure irrigation during droughts; introduce drought-resistant varieties of crops and trees, restore degraded pastures; strengthen the early warning system for emergencies, assess the resilience of infrastructure, including roads, houses and power grids, and take measures to protect public health from climate-related risks.
Kemelova emphasised that these measures will be implemented not only on paper but also on the ground, including in mountainous regions where people are directly affected by the consequences of climate change.
In addition, Kyrgyzstan is actively promoting its climate agenda on the international stage, sharing its experience with other mountain countries and participating in global initiatives to protect mountain ecosystems.
