The highest demographic burden was recorded in the Batken Region — 897 people per 1,000 working-age residents. This was followed by the Jalal-Abad Region — 869 people, the Osh Region — 867, and the Talas Region — 824 people.
The lowest burden was recorded in Bishkek – 514 people per 1,000 people of working age.
At the same time, the proportion of the population of working age has remained virtually unchanged: 56.7 per cent in 2021 compared with 56.9 per cent in 2025.
The economic structure of the population is also influenced by the growing number of people beyond working age. At the start of 2026, they accounted for 10 per cent of the country’s population. Around 67 per cent of this group are women.
A high demographic burden means that the working-age population has to support more children and older people, which places greater strain on the labour market, the pension system and public expenditure.
Migration remains one of the factors influencing the size and regional distribution of the population.
