Just one unit since independence: President criticises the pace of development in the energy sector

Since gaining independence, Kyrgyzstan has commissioned only one unit at the Kambarat-2 hydroelectric power station, which is why the country is still forced to purchase electricity from neighbouring states. This was stated by the country’s President, Sadyr Japarov, whilst commenting on the situation in the energy sector on Facebook.

According to him, despite having significant water resources, Kyrgyzstan faces an electricity shortage due to insufficient development of power generation.

“Situated at the headwaters of major water resources, we are experiencing an electricity shortage solely because we have not built a single large hydroelectric power station over the years,” noted the head of state.

The President reported that during the winter months, Kyrgyzstan continues to import electricity from neighbouring countries to meet the needs of the domestic market.

At the same time, over the past five years, around 50 small and medium-sized hydroelectric power stations have been commissioned in the country. Roughly the same number of facilities are currently under construction.

However, it has not yet been possible to fully resolve the energy shortage. According to the President, the cause remains the rise in electricity consumption against the backdrop of the construction of new businesses, social facilities and housing.

“Demand for electricity is constantly increasing,” he said.

The Head of State emphasised that the authorities are working to eliminate the shortfall and develop the energy sector.

He also announced that the Minister for Energy will regularly update the public on the current situation in the sector.
