08/27/2025, 15:57On August 27, President Sadyr Zhaparov officially launched the construction of the strategic Barskoon-Bedel highway at the expense of the Issyk-Kul region's own funds.
The route will run from north to south through the Barskoon and Sook passes, the Kara-Sai valley, and the Ashuu-Suu pass. To ensure year-round passability, tunnels 5.5 km and 3.8 km long are planned, as well as an overpass bridge structure in the Kara-Sai valley.
The president emphasized that the project is an important step in the development of the state and strengthening ties with the outside world.
“We are building the road with our own resources and at our own expense,” said Sadyr Zhaparov.
China Road and Bridge Corporation has been selected as the contractor. The main work is scheduled to be completed by September 2029, with full completion and commissioning of the road in September 2030.
The road will shorten the route from the Chinese city of Aksu to Kyrgyzstan by 500 kilometers in one direction, saving up to 12 hours for freight carriers. The construction of the Bedel checkpoint will increase trade with China and strengthen bilateral relations.
Chinese Ambassador Liu Jiangping spoke at the ceremony, noting that the projects will accelerate trade, investment, and regional economic development.
The construction of Barskoon-Bedel is one of the country's major infrastructure projects, along with the Kambar-Ata-1 hydroelectric power plant and the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway.
