The referendum on NPP construction started in Kazakhstan

Today, 6 October, Kazakhstan is holding a national referendum on nuclear power plant construction(NPP).

Citizens of the country, who have reached the age of 18, can express their opinion on the question ‘Do you agree with the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan?’. Voting will last until 8 pm local time, but at some polling stations, including military units and shift camps the voting began an hour earlier.

For citizens abroad, 74 polling stations in 59 States are open. Due to the tense situation, polling stations in Lebanon, Iran and Israel have not been established. Within 12 hours of the end of voting, counting will begin and the results will be known within 7 days.

KZT15.5bn has been allocated for the Referendum. The issue of building a nuclear power plant in the Republic has been discussed at the government level since 2019, and the station is planned to be located in the village of Ulken in the Almaty region.

Let us remind you that Kyrgyzstan is negotiating with Rosatom to build a nuclear power plant.
