Kyrgyz jewelry market: only 20% of products meet requirements

The Department of Precious Metals under the Ministry of Finance stepped up efforts to curb the illegal trafficking of jewelry. The inspections revealed a significant volume of products entering the country illegally.

According to the State Customs Service, 201 kg of gold and 1,267 kg of silver jewelry were officially imported into Kyrgyzstan in 2024, but the actual volume of jewelry on the market is much higher. During a recent raid in the shopping centers “Beren Gold” and “Bereket Grand”, conducted jointly with the SCNS, 82 kg of gold jewelry without the Republic's assay marks were found and seized.

According to the law, all jewelry must undergo mandatory testing and branding before sale, but only 20% of products meet these requirements. Many sellers were unable to confirm the origin of jewelry and name suppliers, indicating a high level of shadow market.

The Department of Precious Metals will continue to fight against illegal trafficking, and violators will be fined 28,000 soms for the absence of an assay mark. The cost of state branding is 34 soms for gold jewelry and 24 soms for silver jewelry.
