The digital KGS will be recognized as legal tender starting in January 2027

Legal provisions establishing the status of the digital KGS as legal tender in Kyrgyzstan will take effect in January 2027. This is stated in documents issued by the regulator.

The digital KGS will become the third form of the national currency, alongside cash and non-cash money. The National Bank will be granted the exclusive right to issue it, organize its circulation, and regulate it.

In 2025, the project moved on to the technological testing of the platform prototype and the preparation of pilot testing in a controlled environment. The regulator approved the technical specifications for the phased implementation of the system, including payment scenarios, requirements for digital wallets, integration with other systems, and information security.

In addition, the National Bank identified the participants in the pilot project and began coordinating the distribution of roles and the procedure for connecting to the future infrastructure.

The legal framework for the project was established by two laws signed by the president in April 2025. These laws formalized the official status of the national digital currency and the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic’s authority to issue and regulate it.

The introduction of the digital KGS is expected to improve the efficiency of the payment system, expand public access to financial services, and strengthen the technological independence of the national monetary system. However, the entry into force of these legislative provisions does not mean the automatic, full-scale launch of the digital KGS: its introduction will take place in phases following pilot testing.
