Uzbekistan weighs up joining the EAEU, studying Kyrgyzstan's experience of integration

Uzbekistan is already participating in the Eurasian Economic Union as an observer country, but is in no hurry to decide on full membership. This was stated by Vladimir Paramonov, head of the Central Eurasia analytical group, who arrived in Issyk-Kul to participate in the VII Kyrgyz-Russian Economic Forum, in an interview with Akchabar.

According to him, large-scale expert and public discussions on the pros and cons of joining the EAEU have taken place in Uzbekistan.

"Today, in my opinion, we have chosen the most measured and balanced position — we have become observers, we are watching, we are studying, including the experience of Kyrgyzstan.

Now, 10 years later, it is time to take stock, and it has been a very interesting experience. Kyrgyzstan, as our neighbour and friend, is fundamentally important to us as a model," Paramonov noted.

He stressed that the decision on possible accession will be made taking into account the international situation.

‘We cannot ignore what is happening in the world amid geopolitical tensions and large-scale conflicts that could lead to negative consequences. We just need to wait for the global crises to end, and then we will be able to make a more balanced and calm decision,’ the expert concluded.
