In Kyrgyzstan, with the support of the EFSD, a strategic section of the Bishkek-Osh motorway has been reconstructed. In Kyrgyzstan, reconstruction work has been completed on the Madaniyat-Jalal-Abad section (67 km) of the Bishkek-Osh motorway.

This is a vital highway connecting the north and south of the country and playing a key role in the development of the national economy.

The project was implemented by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic with financial support from the Eurasian Fund for Stabilisation and Development (EFSD, the Fund).
The reconstruction of this section is a priority stage in a large-scale programme to modernise the country's central transport artery. During the works, the road surface was completely renewed with high-strength asphalt concrete; new safety standards were introduced, including improved road markings, lighting, pedestrian crossings and other measures to reduce accidents. Modern engineering structures have also been installed, including drainage systems, barrier fences and road signs.

«For the EBRD, participation in infrastructure projects is a contribution to sustainable development and improving the quality of life of people in member states», — said Artur Arakelyan, Head of Transport and Communications at the EBRD.

According to him, the project has doubled the traffic capacity of the road section.
More than 72 km of asphalt pavement was reconstructed and restored, over 20 km of lighting was installed, more than 45 km of sidewalks were built in cities and villages, and over 36,000 trees and shrubs were planted.

«The reconstruction of the Bishkek-Osh road section is a strategic step that will significantly strengthen the country's transport infrastructure. This highway is a vital corridor for economic activity and social development in the regions, providing reliable and safe communication between the north and south of Kyrgyzstan», — said Beknazar Bazaraliev, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications.

The road connects remote settlements with major cities, which is particularly important for timely medical care, delivery of medicines and the development of social infrastructure.
The project was financed by a $60 million investment loan from the EFSD.
