The number of schoolchildren in Kyrgyzstan has increased by 13 per cent over the past five years

The number of children in pre-school educational institutions in Kyrgyzstan has risen by 38 per cent over the past five years. In 2025, their number reached 276,000, according to the National Statistics Committee.

At the same time, the proportion of children aged 1–6 attending pre-school institutions rose from 24 per cent in 2021 to 35 per cent in 2025.

At the start of the 2025/2026 academic year, there were 2,374 full-time secondary general education institutions operating in Kyrgyzstan. The number of pupils has risen by 13 per cent over the past five years, reaching 1.6 million. Of these, 51 per cent are boys and 49 per cent are girls.

Around 116,000 children were admitted to Year 1 in the 2025/2026 academic year. This is 22 per cent fewer than in the 2021/2022 academic year.

In 2025, there were 93 institutions operating within the initial vocational education system, with around 28,000 students enrolled. Over the course of the year, more than 20,000 skilled workers were trained — 15 per cent fewer than in 2021.

At the same time, the number of students in secondary vocational education institutions rose from 98,000 in 2021 to more than 133,000 in 2025.

At the start of the 2025/2026 academic year, there were 64 leading universities operating in the country. These institutions were attended by over 231,000 students — roughly the same number as five years ago.

Over the past five years, approximately 21 per cent of Kyrgyzstan’s state budget expenditure has been allocated to education.
