Osh State University has developed a start-up project to produce dietary supplements from artichokes

Osh State University has developed a start-up project for growing artichokes and producing dietary supplements. The project won the national ‘Student Start-up – 2025’ competition and received a grant of 790,800 KGS.

The project is being developed by a team from the Department of Pharmaceutical Organisation and Pharmacognosy. According to project participant Nurseit Satarov, the idea is based on scientific research and aims to create a local alternative to imported dietary supplements.

“We want to produce a product of the same quality, but locally manufactured and at an affordable price,” he noted.

Artichoke is widely used in global medicine due to its content of biologically active substances, including cynarin and antioxidants. These compounds help support liver function, improve metabolism and eliminate toxins from the body. In the pharmaceutical industry, artichoke is used as a base for medicines and food supplements designed to support the digestive system.

The project covers the entire production cycle — from growing the raw materials to producing the finished product in capsule form. Artichokes are planned to be cultivated in Kyrgyzstan in accordance with agronomic requirements. Sowing takes place in spring, and harvesting occurs during the period of maximum concentration of biologically active substances.

Among the product’s key advantages, the developers cite localised production and a potentially lower cost compared to imported equivalents. The university is also exploring opportunities for further distribution through pharmaceutical companies.

The funds raised will be used to purchase equipment and launch the production process. Looking ahead, the team plans to expand the range and begin producing other types of dietary supplements.

According to the university, the project was one of two winners of the university’s competition.

The interview with the developer was conducted by Zinagul Nuralieva, press secretary of Osh State University.
