Over 40% of Bishkek residents use private transport to get around

A study of residents' transport behaviour is being conducted in Bishkek, the results of which already show what travel habits have been formed among city dwellers and suburban residents.

The most popular means of transport remains private transport – cars or taxis. They are used by 41% of respondents. Slightly fewer – 38% – choose public transport. Another 21% of city dwellers prefer walking, cycling or scooters.

The study also shows that residents most often travel to the city centre, which remains the main point of attraction for work and other activities. The Leninsky district ranks second in popularity.

It is noted separately that residents of the Leninsky and Oktyabrsky districts are more often forced to travel to other parts of the capital. Experts attribute this to the imbalance between the location of residential areas and areas of attraction — workplaces, educational institutions and recreational areas.

This data will form the basis of the transport section of the Bishkek Master Plan, which should help the city build a more balanced transport system and improve public transport.
