A fine of up to 2 million KGS: a leisure centre owner could break the law with just one decorative item

In Kyrgyzstan, the illegal possession of a snow leopard pelt is punishable by a fine of up to 2 million KGS, whilst that of a brown bear pelt carries a fine of up to 1.5 million KGS. This was reported by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision following an inspection in the At-Bashin district.

During a raid on a private holiday resort, inspectors from the Environmental and Technical Service discovered the skins of a snow leopard, a species listed in the Red Book, and a brown bear. The owner claimed to have acquired them around 30 years ago, but was unable to provide documentary evidence to confirm their legal origin.

Following the inspection, a report was drawn up, but the owner refused to sign it. All the data collected is being forwarded to the law enforcement authorities for further legal assessment and a decision to be taken in accordance with the law.
