The bill was initiated by Jogorku Kenesh deputies Kamila Talieva and Marlen Mamataliyev.
According to one of the bill’s authors, Kamila Talieva, the proposed amendments are aimed at preserving the country’s unique geological sites, developing sustainable tourism and creating additional opportunities for the socio-economic development of the regions.
“Geoparks are of immense cultural and social significance to society. We must therefore not only foster environmental awareness but also carefully preserve our national heritage”, — the MP noted.
During the discussion, MP Mahabat Mavlyanova emphasised that mountains cover around 94 per cent of Kyrgyzstan’s territory, and proposed considering the possibility of establishing geoparks in every district of the country. In her view, this would enable local residents to generate additional income through the development of tourism. She also highlighted the need for strict compliance with environmental and health and safety requirements.
MP Alisher Kozuev put forward proposals to increase tourist numbers and strengthen public awareness campaigns in this area. Furthermore, he enquired about potential difficulties regarding land reclassification. A representative of the Cabinet of Ministers assured the committee that all issues would be resolved in accordance with current legislation.
The committee also approved, in three readings, the draft law ‘On Geological Parks in the Kyrgyz Republic’, initiated by MPs Kamila Talieva, Marlen Mamataliyev and Bolot Borbiev.
