This involves a large-scale transition to more efficient irrigation systems — drip, sprinkler and other technologies that reduce water losses and increase agricultural productivity.
The EDB notes that the country’s agricultural sector remains heavily reliant on traditional surface irrigation, which is used on the vast majority of irrigated land. By 2025, the proportion of irrigated land using water-saving technologies in the country stands at 2%.
It is specifically highlighted that the water management infrastructure development programme up to 2028 includes the expansion of irrigated areas through the modernisation of canals, the construction and restoration of water bodies, and the installation of efficient water use systems.
