Kyrgyzstan to increase irrigated land by 6,000 hectares

Kyrgyzstan continues to implement projects to build and renovate reservoirs aimed at improving the efficient use of water resources. Work is underway at seven sites with a total reservoir capacity of over 40 million cubic meters.

By the end of 2025, five projects are planned to be completed, which will improve water supply to 8,129 hectares of agricultural land and bring 5,995 hectares of new irrigated land into production.

It should be noted that, according to Stanislav Chuev, senior analyst at the EDB, of the $67.5 billion invested by international financial organizations (IFOs) in the region over the past 15 years, only 6% went to water supply and sanitation infrastructure, which is 147 projects worth about $4 billion.

Investment in water infrastructure is not only a matter of food security, but also a strategic step towards adapting to climate change and increasing agricultural exports. The projects cover the Chui, Naryn, Issyk-Kul, and Jalal-Abad regions.
