Japan's largest bank has expressed interest in the Kambar-Atinskaya HPP-1 and KNR-KR-RUz railway projects

The Ministry of Finance held talks with representatives of MUFG Bank, Japan's largest commercial bank and one of the world's largest financial institutions.

Until now, this bank had not appeared on the list of Kyrgyzstan's creditors, and its contacts with Bishkek had not been reported in the media. Therefore, the very fact of the meeting is an event in itself. The discussions focused on strategic projects — the Kambar-Ata HPP-1 and the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway.

Finance Minister Almaz Baketaev emphasised that Kyrgyzstan is open to cooperation and ready to offer its partners favourable terms. According to him, attracting capital to these projects will strengthen the country's energy and transport independence, contributing to sustainable economic growth.

For Japan, participation in Central Asian infrastructure could be part of a broader strategy to expand its presence in a region where competition among global players is intensifying.

‘We see MUFG as a key partner in achieving our ambitious goals,’ Baketaev said.

At the end of the meeting, Finance Minister Almaz Baketaev invited the MUFG Bank delegation to visit Kyrgyzstan for in-depth discussions on investment opportunities.

The question of whether Japan will actually be interested in building the Kambar-Ata hydroelectric power plant and railway remains open. But the very fact that Japan's largest bank is on Bishkek's negotiating agenda is already an event in itself.
