Bishkek City Hall and the World Bank discussed measures to reduce air pollution

A meeting was held at the capital's city hall between Bishkek Mayor Aibek Junushaliyev and Gayane Minasyan, World Bank Practice Manager for Environment in Europe and Central Asia. The talks focused on initiatives to improve air quality in the capital.

The parties discussed current and planned projects being implemented by the Bishkek City Hall as part of the program of the same name. In particular, they discussed the development of a “Green Belt” concept around the city, the pilot introduction of heat pumps in the residential sector as an alternative to traditional heating sources, and other environmental measures aimed at reducing air pollution.

The head of the capital presented key infrastructure projects which, according to the mayor's office, should have a long-term effect on the environmental situation in the city. These include the construction and operation of an eco-technology plant, the modernization and improvement of the efficiency of the municipal enterprises Bishkek Thermal Power Plant, Bishkek Heat Network, and Bishkek Heat Energy, as well as the cleaning of the Alamudun and Ala-Archa riverbeds and environmental control measures implemented by the Municipal Inspectorate.

Aibek Junushaliyev noted separately that 50,000 planting materials have already been received for the greening of the city, which will be used as part of the program to expand green areas.

“I hope that our cooperation will have a positive impact not only on the practical improvement of air quality, but also on the formation of Bishkek's image as a green and environmentally sustainable city,” the mayor emphasized.
