Bishkek City Council plans to purchase a further 625 buses

Plans are afoot in Bishkek to purchase 625 small buses to serve residential areas. This was announced by the capital’s city council following a working meeting with representatives of manufacturing companies.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Mayor Ramiz Aliyev. Participants were presented with the technical specifications for the future fleet, specifically for buses that must operate effectively on narrow streets and in densely built-up areas.

The City Council emphasised that, when selecting suppliers, priority will be given to value for money, as well as compliance with safety, environmental and comfort requirements.

More than 12 bus manufacturers took part in the meeting. They received clarification on the procurement conditions and raised their questions.

The companies must now prepare commercial proposals. Following this, the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development will analyse them and select the supplier and bus model.

Against the backdrop of ongoing transport reforms in Bishkek, where new buses and electric buses have already been procured, expanding the fleet in residential areas may form part of an effort to ease the strain on the transport system. However, as experience shows, the impact of modernising the fleet depends not only on the availability of the vehicles themselves, but also on traffic management.
