The 0.42-hectare plot is located next to Panfilov Park in Bishkek.
It turned out that the illegal privatisation was organised through a corruption scheme involving high-ranking officials who issued an illegal decision by the city council. During the investigation, the persons involved were identified, and thanks to the actions of the State Committee for National Security, the plot was returned to state ownership on the basis of a court decision.
Before the plot was transferred to private hands, the planetarium was used for educational purposes, with astronomy lessons for schoolchildren. However, after its privatisation, the building began to be used for other purposes, including the organisation of controversial events, which caused public outrage. In the early 2020s, activists began efforts to return the planetarium to city ownership.
