RWA refers to traditional assets, such as shares, bonds, gold and property, represented on the blockchain as digital tokens.
The largest category is tokenised bond and money market funds, with a volume of $18.29 billion. Tokenised equities are growing the fastest: their volume has increased by 390.4 per cent to $4.43 billion.
However, tokenisation currently accounts for only around 0.01 per cent of assets that could potentially be transferred to the blockchain.
The use of existing tokens is also on the rise. Around 12 per cent of tokenised capital is utilised in financial services — for example, in exchanges, lending and the use of assets as collateral.
Binance Research expects the RWA market to continue growing, but notes that its development will depend not only on the issuance of new tokens, but also on how actively they are used.
