Starting this year, Kyrgyzstan will lease land plots to Kazakhstan for 49 years

Starting this year, Kyrgyzstan will lease land and resort facilities to Kazakhstan for 49 years, according to the Kazakh publication inbusiness.kz, citing official documents.

The agreement, which comes into force in 2026, provides for the mutual provision of real estate for diplomatic needs and temporary use of land. Kyrgyzstan has already transferred land plots to Kazakhstan for the construction of an embassy and ambassador's residence, and the new document specifies resort facilities in Issyk-Kul: the Kazakhstan sanatorium, the Samal holiday home, and the University and Olymp sports and recreation centers.

The land under these facilities formally remains the property of Kyrgyzstan, but is transferred for 49 years. Kazakhstan has undertaken to renovate them to the level of three- to four-star hotels and to develop sports centers, with strict deadlines for completion of the work (by 2029). If these obligations are not fulfilled, the facilities may be returned to Kyrgyzstan.

Lawmakers from both countries have already ratified the agreement, but questions remain about the economic benefits and further use of the assets.
