In 2024, Kyrgyzstanis living below the poverty line lived on less than 5,500 KGS per month

In 2024, the official poverty line in Kyrgyzstan was set at 65,417 KGS per capita per year, which is equivalent to approximately 5,451 KGS per month.

One million 871 thousand citizens of the country lived on this amount, and most of them — 61.9% — lived in rural areas. Of particular concern is the high proportion of children, 954.5 thousand people, or 33.1% of the poor population, who are citizens under the age of 17.

Despite the fact that the overall poverty rate fell by 4.1 percentage points to 25.7%, the problem remains unresolved. In rural areas, the decline was only 1.8 percentage points, while in cities it was a more noticeable 7.3 percentage points.

Extreme poverty stands out as a separate category. In 2024, 198,300 people lived in such conditions, with an income of 41,349 KGS per year, which is only 3,446 KGS per month per person.

According to estimates by experts from the National Statistics Committee, an additional 22.3 billion KGS would be required in 2024 to raise the incomes of the poor population to at least the minimum poverty line.

The poverty level is calculated using the cost of consumption, which directly depends on the income of the population. On average, the disposable income of Kyrgyz citizens in 2024 amounted to 11,318.6 KGS per month per capita, an increase of 16.5% (plus 1,602.6 KGS) compared to the previous year.
