The implementation of the ‘Social Assistance through Social Contracts’ programme continues in the Kyrgyz Republic. The programme aims to support low-income and disadvantaged families, help them overcome difficult life situations, improve citizens’ living conditions and create opportunities for self-employment.
As of 1 March 2026, 607 contracts have already been concluded, and the acceptance of applications and selection of participants is ongoing.
The project has been running since 2022, during which time 48,557 social contracts have been concluded. For the most part, residents of Kyrgyzstan use the funds from the social contract to develop agriculture. Furthermore, the main participants in the project are women, predominantly living in rural areas.
In addition to participants in the initiative gaining the opportunity to develop their own businesses, they have also provided 57,000 people with jobs, which has improved living conditions for over 228,000 citizens. Across the country, 1,329 small enterprises have been established, of which 186 are registered as sole traders, 1,143 operate under a business licence and 4 are limited liability companies.
There are already those who, thanks to the support received, have managed to increase their income to 1 million KGS a year.
It should be noted that in 2024, 1,871,000 people were living below the poverty line in the country, 61.9% of whom were residents of rural areas.
