More than 40 new hydropower plants will be built in Kyrgyzstan by 2030

Dayirbek Orunbekov, head of the information policy service of the Kyrgyz Republic's presidential administration, spoke about the country's ambitious plans in the energy sector. According to him, in the coming years, Kyrgyzstan intends to solve the problem of energy shortages through the active construction of hydroelectric power plants.

According to official data, the peak of project implementation will fall on 2026-2030. During this period, it is planned to launch dozens of small and medium-sized hydroelectric power plants throughout the country.

In particular, in 2026, construction will begin on 25 hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 286.2 MW. Among the key projects are:

  • Orto-Tokoy HPP — 21 MW,
  • Kulanak HPP — 100 MW,
  • Turgen Hydroelectric Power Plant — 26 MW,
  • Maily-Suu Hydroelectric Power Plant — 26 MW,
  • Ak-Suu Hydroelectric Power Plant-3 — 17.7 MW.

Orunbekov noted that some of the facilities are being implemented with the support of the private sector, while others are being funded by government investments.

The next stage of development is expected in 2027–2030. During this period, it is planned to launch another 14 hydropower plants with a total capacity of more than 170 MW. Among the most significant are the Papanskaya (27 MW), Zheruyskaya (28 MW), and Chandalaskskaya (30 MW) stations.

In addition, by 2030, it is planned to build the Konorchok, Kyzyl-Suu, Kichi-Kemin, Kyshtuut, and Nizhne-Tarskaya hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 44.7 MW.

Also in the plans are the Chon-Kemin hydroelectric power plant (26 MW, Chui region) and Chok-Talskaya HPP (3.7 MW, Issyk-Kul region).

According to Oronbekov, all these projects are part of a long-term energy security program launched in 2021 on the instructions of President Sadyr Zhaparov.
