The Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Institute of Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic have signed a contract to develop a methodology for creating protective forest plantations in 22 problem areas.
Such forest plantations will help to curb mudslides, floods, and landslides, restore soils, and protect land from destruction. This is important not only for the environment but also for the economy—less damage to infrastructure, more stability for agriculture, new jobs, and investment in green technologies.
The project will be the first step towards the introduction of nature-based solutions in risk management. Such approaches are increasingly being used around the world because they help nature, people, and the budget.
