Kyrgyzstan has no plans for mass redundancies of teachers of retirement age — Ministry of Education

There are no plans in Kyrgyzstan for mass redundancies of teachers of retirement age. This was announced by the Ministry of Education in response to information circulating on social media.

According to the ministry, there are currently around 15,000 teachers of retirement age working in the country’s educational institutions. Their many years of experience and knowledge are of great importance to the education system.

Following the increase in teachers’ salaries, the number of people wishing to work in schools has risen, including among young professionals. In light of this, the Ministry is considering new approaches to attracting young teachers whilst also utilising the knowledge and experience of seasoned teachers.

In particular, discussions are taking place regarding the possibility of engaging teachers of retirement age as mentors for young professionals, providing methodological support, and working as teaching assistants or advisers. Furthermore, options for a flexible allocation of their teaching workload are being considered.

The Ministry emphasised that these proposals are still at the discussion stage. At the same time, teachers must not be discriminated against on the grounds of age.

“No teacher should be discriminated against because of their age. The experience of the older generation and the energy of young professionals must serve a common goal — ensuring a high-quality education for every child in Kyrgyzstan”, — the ministry’s statement reads.
