The Jogorku Kenesh has called for preparations to begin for the construction of a nuclear power station in Kyrgyzstan

To ensure long-term energy security and independence, Kyrgyzstan needs to start considering the construction of a nuclear power station today. This was stated by MP Ulan Primov at a plenary session of the Jogorku Kenesh.

According to the MP, the country’s hydropower potential must be utilised to the full, but relying solely on it in the long term is risky.

“Only God knows what our hydropower potential will be in 50 or 100 years’ time. I have spoken about this repeatedly, both in committee and at plenary sessions: sooner or later, we will turn to nuclear power anyway. If we want to guarantee the security, economic development and future of our country, the solution lies precisely there,” — the MP emphasised.

Ulan Primov called on the Cabinet of Ministers not to delay this matter and to begin work on the nuclear power plant project immediately, citing the experience of neighbouring states in the region as an example.

“Look at our neighbours: Kazakhstan has been openly discussing this issue for many years, put the matter to a referendum and is set to begin construction as early as 2027. In Uzbekistan, the process of building a nuclear power station is already underway. If the Cabinet of Ministers truly wants to achieve energy independence, we must act right now,” Primov concluded.
