Electricity generation at small hydroelectric power stations in Kyrgyzstan has risen to 320.5 million kWh

In Kyrgyzstan in 2024, electricity generation at small hydroelectric power stations, which are classified as renewable energy sources, increased significantly. According to official statistics, generation reached 320.5 million kWh, compared with 196.7 million kWh a year earlier.

Growth over the year amounted to more than 60%, which was the highest figure in the last seven years.

In 2018, small hydropower plants generated 216.4 million kWh of electricity. Subsequently, figures gradually declined: in 2019 to 204.2 million kWh, and in 2020 to 196.6 million kWh. Between 2021 and 2023, generation remained within the range of 196–206 million kWh.

Against this backdrop, the results for 2024 indicate a sharp recovery and expansion of the small hydropower sector.

Small hydropower plants are classified as renewable energy sources and are considered a more environmentally friendly way of generating electricity. Unlike large hydroelectric power stations, they have a lower environmental impact and utilise the energy of natural water flow.

At the same time, the area of specially protected natural territories in Kyrgyzstan remains stable. Since 2019, their share of the country’s total area has remained at 6.5%. There are 10 state nature reserves and 13 nature parks in the republic.
