A mere 300 KGS separate a quarter of a million Kyrgyzstanis from poverty

The social situation in Kyrgyzstan remains uneven. At the end of 2024, 1.87 million citizens in the republic were officially recognised as poor. In addition, even a slight increase in the cost of the consumer basket could push tens of thousands more Kyrgyz citizens below the poverty line.

According to the National Statistics Committee, in 2024, 25.7% of the country's population, or 1.87 million people, were living below the poverty line. This included 954,500 children, or one-third of all citizens under the age of 17.

At the same time, sensitivity analysis showed that if the poverty line were to rise by just 5% — approximately 272–300 KGS per month per capita — the proportion of poor people would increase to 29.3%. This means that an additional 262,000 Kyrgyz citizens would fall below the poverty line. This is due to the high concentration of the population around this indicator.

It should be noted that in 2024, the value of the poverty line was 65,400 KGS per capita per year, and the extreme poverty line was 41,300 KGS. At the same time, the dynamics differ depending on the place of residence. In urban areas, the poverty rate fell by 7.3 percentage points, while in rural areas it fell by 1.8 percentage points.
