Today, February 24, the Committee on Industrial Policy, Transport, Energy, Architecture, and Construction of the Jogorku Kenesh approved in the first reading a draft law on the ratification of an agreement on the reconstruction of the bridge across the Naryn River.
This involves grant financing from the Japanese government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The relevant exchange notes and grant agreement were signed in Bishkek on December 12, 2025. The document is now undergoing the parliamentary ratification process.
The project was presented to the deputies by Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Ulukbek Zhanibekov. According to him, the reconstruction of the bridge is not just a replacement of the old structure, but a step towards improving the sustainability of the entire transport system of the country. The facility is located at the 315th kilometer of the strategic Bishkek-Osh highway, a road that connects the north and south of the republic and provides transit flows to neighboring countries.
The existing bridge was built in 1964, at a time when technical standards and transport loads were different. After decades of intensive use, the structure has become morally and physically obsolete. The new bridge, which is planned to be built this year, must meet modern requirements for safety, load capacity, and earthquake resistance.
In fact, this is a modernization of one of the key elements of the infrastructure, on which the smooth flow of traffic along the entire highway depends.
