Railways and green energy: key Chinese projects in Kyrgyzstan

In 2024–2025, Chinese investment in Kyrgyzstan will focus on major infrastructure and environmental projects. One of the key green projects is the construction of a solar power plant in Balykchy on the shores of Issyk-Kul with the support of the Green Energy Fund under the Kyrgyz government.

The construction of the Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway with the participation of China Railway International remains a strategic project. The Chinese side's share in the joint venture is 51%, and the total investment is estimated at $3.53 billion. Of this amount, $2.35 billion is provided in the form of a concessional loan from Chinese financial institutions. Construction began in December 2024, and the launch of traffic is expected by 2030.

The project, which is over 500 km long, more than half of which runs through Kyrgyzstan, should significantly increase the country's transit potential and strengthen its role in international logistics routes between China, the Middle East and Europe.
