The agricultural sector is undergoing a structural shift: a decline in industrial crops and growth in livestock farming

The latest data on Kyrgyzstan’s agriculture reveal a shift in the structure of production: some traditional crops are losing ground, whilst livestock farming and vegetable growing continue to expand.

Cereals remain the backbone of the sector, though the trend is unstable. After peaking in 2024 (2.0855 million tonnes), production fell to 1.789 million tonnes in 2025, whilst remaining above the levels of 2010 and 2023.

A sharp decline is observed in industrial crops. Raw cotton production has fallen by more than two-thirds over 15 years — from 74,000 to 23,500 tonnes. The tobacco industry has virtually collapsed, with volumes falling from 9,900 to 500 tonnes. Sugar beet, following growth in 2024 (957.4 thousand tonnes), also fell to 539 thousand tonnes.

Against this backdrop, the food production segment is strengthening. Vegetable production reached 1,366.5 thousand tonnes in 2025 — the highest level for the period under review. Potato production is showing a gradual decline but remains at over 1.1 million tonnes.

Livestock farming is showing the most sustained growth. Meat production increased from 187,800 to 268,600 tonnes, and milk production from 1,359,900 to 1,881,500 tonnes. Egg production has more than doubled, reaching 938.4 million units. Wool production is also showing moderate growth.

Current trends indicate a gradual shift in the agricultural sector towards domestic food supply and livestock farming, against a backdrop of a declining role for export-oriented industrial crops.
