No fairground rides, but cycle paths – how Ataturk Park is set to change

Plans are afoot to transform Ataturk Park in Bishkek into a modern space for walking, sport and peaceful relaxation. The authorities are moving away from fairground rides and wish to focus on greening and safety.

Azamat Kadyrov, Deputy Mayor of Bishkek, spoke about the redevelopment plans during a tour of the site with journalists. According to him, the park will feature cycle paths stretching for around 3 kilometres, workout areas, and zones for sports and chess.

In addition, the municipality has managed to reclaim 5 hectares of the park’s land. Plans are in place to create a walking area on this site and build a museum dedicated to Afghan war veterans.

The city council also stated that it intends to preserve most of the greenery. Following an inspection, 192 dead trees were identified out of 14,000. CCTV cameras will be installed around the perimeter of the park and at junctions. The ‘Bermet’ café will be refurbished in line with the city’s new design code.
