The EBRD and its partners will allocate up to €64 million to modernize Bishkek’s district heating system

One of the largest infrastructure projects in recent years in the utilities sector will be implemented in Bishkek. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and international partners will provide up to €64 million to modernize the capital’s district heating system.

The relevant agreements were signed in London during a meeting of mayors from partner cities in the EBRD’s “Green Cities” program, which was attended by Bishkek Mayor Aibek Junushaliyev.

The project calls for a comprehensive upgrade of the city’s district heating system. Specifically, plans include modernizing heating networks, pumping stations, and boiler houses; implementing modern control systems and energy-efficient equipment; and utilizing renewable energy technologies.

The project is expected to improve the reliability of the capital’s heat supply, reduce heat loss, lower operating costs, and decrease harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

City officials note that the modernization of the heat supply system is one of the key projects within the framework of Bishkek’s participation in the EBRD’s “Green Cities” program. It is aimed not only at renewing worn-out infrastructure but also at improving the quality of public utilities for the capital’s residents.

The meeting in London focused on issues of sustainable urban development, the modernization of urban infrastructure, and adaptation to climate change. It was attended by city leaders, representatives of international financial organizations, and experts.

In addition to signing agreements on heat supply, Aibek Junushaliyev held talks with EBRD leadership and international partners on the prospects for implementing new infrastructure projects in Bishkek.
