Kyrgyzstan’s economy is shifting its focus toward domestic demand

The structure of Kyrgyzstan’s GDP for 2020–2024 has shifted toward the services sector: its share rose to 52.3%, an increase of 1.6 percentage points. At the same time, goods production reduced its share of the economy by 5.8 percentage points, to 33.3%.

Trade and the financial sector made the largest contributions to the growth of the services sector. The share of wholesale and retail trade, including automobile repair, increased by 2.8 percentage points; financial intermediation and insurance—by 2.5 percentage points; and hotels and restaurants—by 1.1 percentage points.

In the goods sector, the decline was more widespread. The share of agriculture decreased by 3.6 percentage points, construction by 1.6 percentage points, and energy by 1.3 percentage points. A less noticeable but steady decline was recorded in manufacturing and the water supply and waste management sector—0.4 percentage points each.

Mining was an exception: its share in GDP grew by 1.2 percentage points, partially offsetting the overall decline in goods production.

The current trend indicates a strengthening of the role of domestic demand and service sectors in the economy. At the same time, the decline in the share of core manufacturing sectors may increase growth’s dependence on trade and the financial market, which are sensitive to fluctuations in business activity.
