This imbalance has persisted for many years: ‘male’ and ‘female’ professions in the country have historically been segregated.
In 2024, the working population in Kyrgyzstan stood at around 2.75 million people, of whom 1.67 million were men and 1.08 million were women.
The breakdown by sector reveals a marked gender imbalance: men are mainly employed in construction and transport, whilst women are concentrated in education and healthcare. This structure is explained by the established characteristics of the labour market and the traditional division of professions.
