State Committee for National Security: the actions of two customs officers have caused significant damage to the state

The State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan, in conjunction with the Southern Region Internal Investigations Department of the State Customs Service, has detained two inspectors from the inspection team at the ‘BIMI Osh Service’ customs clearance point of the Osh Customs Office.

Those detained are inspectors K.U.T. and T.A.M. A criminal case is being investigated against them under Article 337 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic – ‘Abuse of official position’.

According to the State Committee for National Security (GKNB), the customs officers, by using their official powers contrary to the interests of the service, colluded with certain representatives of entities engaged in foreign economic activity. In return for financial gain, they allegedly failed to carry out proper customs checks and inspections of the goods being transported.

Furthermore, according to the investigation, the inspectors facilitated the clearance of goods by ensuring they were incorrectly declared. This created conditions for evading the customs procedures and controls prescribed by law.

As a result, the State, according to the State Committee for National Security, suffered substantial financial loss.

For the duration of the investigation, those detained have been held in the GKNB’s pre-trial detention centre.

Work is currently ongoing to identify other customs officials who may have been involved in the scheme that has come to light. The GKNB has stated its intention to bring all those involved to justice in accordance with the law.
