The main rule when planting a garden is 80% of the main variety and 20% of pollinator varieties

Specialists from the Department of Agricultural Crops and Horticulture remind us that the sustainability and productivity of an orchard directly depend on how the varieties were selected and distributed during planting. The right combination of trees provides a more stable harvest and protects the garden from the risks associated with uneven flowering of individual varieties.

The key recommendation of experts is the optimal proportion of varieties:

80% — the main variety, which will provide the bulk of the production,

and 20% — 2–3 pollinator varieties, ensuring high-quality cross-pollination.

Gardeners note that individual varieties may not bloom in some years, and the presence of pollinators helps to preserve the harvest even in unstable climatic conditions.

When choosing seedlings, it is also necessary to take into account the biological characteristics of the varieties, namely growth rate, disease resistance, watering and care requirements. Varieties with similar characteristics are easier to maintain and more effective to grow in the same garden.

Recommendations for combining varieties:

  • Summer varieties — plant in groups of 2–3 varieties;
  • Autumn varieties — also combine in groups of 2–3 varieties;
  • Winter varieties — place separately to ensure optimal ripening conditions.

This approach not only increases yield but also improves the economic efficiency of the agricultural enterprise — a stable volume of production simplifies sales planning and reduces risks.
