03/22/2026, 10:49Kyrgyzstan intends to continue prioritizing hydropower while expanding its renewable energy capacity, according to data from the Eurasian Development Bank.
According to the bank’s estimates, the country plans to commission approximately 4.6 GW of new hydropower plants, including large-scale projects, as well as develop small hydropower plants and modernize existing capacity.
At the same time, the alternative generation segment is taking shape: by 2035, projects are planned to build 3.65 GW of solar power plants and 400 MW of wind power capacity.
This development structure indicates a combined approach to the power system, in which hydropower retains its role as the baseload source, while renewable energy sources are used to meet growing demand and smooth out seasonal fluctuations in generation.
The Eurasian Development Bank notes that a similar model is emerging in other countries in the region, where the development of renewable energy is combined with the retention of traditional generation to ensure the stability of the power supply.
